VOLUNTEER FOR GURU NANAK
Guru Nanak came to this world with a mission. His mission was continued by His 9 successors up to Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Guru Gobind Singh Ji passed on the Guruship to Khalsa Panth and Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Now its our responsibility to continue that mission. Let’s continue their mission the way they did.
There are many Gursikhs who want to do something for the Panth. But don’t know what to do. We have compiled a list of projects on which you can work. Pick up a project of your choice, let us know and start working.

Balbir ji,
This is kind of a reverse volunteer request. . . a small group is gathering to address the need for transparency and accountability from Sikh institutes, including Gurdwara management. Specifically, the idea of earmarking Sangat donations has come to the fore and is being discussed at http://www.sikhnet.com/news/how-i-was-escorted-out-gurudwara and http://www.sikhsailor.com/2010/07/how-i-was-escorted-out-of-a-gurudwara/ .
I am wondering if you have insight into the public disclosure practices of Canadian Gurdwaras. I know that in Canada, charitable, non-profit and not-for-profit entitites are required to have disclosure of accounts to their members, as well as the government. The books are opened at the annual general assembly for the members’ review and monthly meeting are held for council discussion, which can be attended by members and the public. The only time that meetings are closed to the public is when they are ‘in camera’ and this should be infrequent.
I’m hoping you will take an interest in furthering a project of this nature. Please share your thoughts.
Sat Sri Akal,

Whenever public money is involved, there should be full disclosure and transperancy.
I have not talked to any Gurdwara Mgt yet, but this is my personal view that Gurdwara Mgt (Day to Day) should be handled by hired employees and their activities should be audited by an independent Chartered Accountant or CGA firm. Those accounts should be available to public. CA/CGA cannot give wrong reports. Gurdwara mgt should set goals and budgets and all money should be used exclusively for those goals and within the budget. All numbers should be audited. I hope this can ensure best use of Sangat (Public) money.
What are your thoughts on that !.

Balbir ji,
I think you’ve defined the ideal. I’m going to research Canadian rules for religious institution accountability to see what the requirements are before approaching Gurdwara management to see what their practices include.
I would like to further the objective of earmarking donations, as this would give the Sangat a greater sense of involvement in determining unified, community action, which seems to be lacking.
Thank you for your response and let me know if you have any other thoughts or suggestions in this vein.
Sat Sri Akal,
